After fulfilling their legal duties, Luke tells us, Joseph and Mary settled in Galilee, in the city of Nazareth. The evangelist Matthew gives quite a different version. According to him, magi from the east arrived in Bethlehem to pay homage to the child savior.

During their travels, they stayed at the court of the Roman client king in Jerusalem, Herod, and told him that the new ruler of Israel was born. With Herod being an incredibly jealous man, this put the entire Holy Family in danger. Once the magi had brought the child gifts and departed, an angel appeared to Joseph. It said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” (Luke 2:13)
